This talk will provide an overview of how dry EEG provides an opportunity to investigate disorders of consciousness, importantly delirium, the clinical management of which is substantially impeded by the lack of biomarkers. Currently, any studies investigating delirium face the dilemma of making assumptions about its endotype (i.e. underlying brain-state) based on the investigations of its phenotype, i.e. oberservable behavior. Neurophysiological research has provided biomarkers that promise a more proxy read-out of the brain-states underlying delirium than observations, which may facilitate omics research of delirium pathophysiology and the characterization of potential biomarkers.

Dr. Fleischmann is a consultant neurologist at the University Hospital Greifswald, Germany. He specialized in neurological intensive care at the Charité Berlin, until he moved to Greifswald to lead the movement disorder section and co-lead the delirium prevention unit providing consultation services for in-hospital patients at risk for neurocognitive complications. Since his first days in intensive care, he pursues a strong interest in neurophysiological research of delirium to better understand its underlying brain-states and improve clinical management. His special interest is the investigation of quantitative electroencephalography that provides surrogate read-outs of network dysfunction and thus potential biomarkers of delirium endotypes.
